Comments Tauberschwarz is a relatively obscure variety that was rescued from extinction in the 1960’s and is now undergoing a renaissance in Germany. It is cultivated in the German growing regions of Baden and Württemberg with a total of 14 hectares as of 2007. Tauberschwarz is a red variety that produces fruity red, rose or white wines. The variety is interesting from a viticulture perspective as it is winter hardy and has late bud break.

Comments This selection came to Foundation Plant Services in 2012 from Dr. Bernd Hill at Staatliche Lehr-und Versuchsanstalt für Wein- und Obstbau -Referat Rebenzüchtung in Weinsberg, Germany. The variety is reportedly interesting from a viticulture perspective as it is winter hardy and has late bud break. The original material successfully completed testing to qualify for the FPS Classic foundation vineyard in 2013. The selection also underwent microshoot tip tissue culture therapy at FPS in 2013. That treated material successfully completed testing to qualify for the Russell Ranch Foundation Vineyard in 2015.
