This compendium describing the origin of the grape selections in the foundation vineyard at Foundation Plant Services, University of California, Davis, has been a work in progress for over a decade. Articles describing the various cultivars and clones previously appeared in the FPS Grape Program Newsletter until 2012. The chapters in this online publication expand on those prior efforts and will include many new topics including the history of the grape nursery industry in California and the development of the clean plant program at U.C. Davis beginning in 1952.
Director Deborah Golino and I have worked for many years to ensure that the heritage of the FPS and UCD grapevine collection is memorialized and that the information is easily available to industry members and other interested readers. Although this compendium is not yet complete, we feel that the information is valuable and would like to share what is ready at this time. Additional chapters will be added as they are finished.
